Background
This gene encodes a bifunctional enzyme containingphosphoribosylaminoimidazole carboxylase activity in its N-terminalregion and phosphoribosylaminoimidazole succinocarboxamidesynthetase in its C-terminal region. It catalyzes steps 6 and 7 ofpurine biosynthesis. The gene is closely linked and divergentlytranscribed with a locus that encodes an enzyme in the samepathway, and transcription of the two genes is coordinatelyregulated. The human genome contains several pseudogenes of thisgene. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms havebeen found for this gene.
