Background
This gene encodes the alpha chain of type X collagen, ashort chain collagen expressed by hypertrophic chondrocytes duringendochondral ossification. Unlike type VIII collagen, the othershort chain collagen, type X collagen is a homotrimer. Mutations inthis gene are associated with Schmid type metaphysealchondrodysplasia (SMCD) and Japanese type spondylometaphysealdysplasia (SMD).
