Background

Action potentials in vertebrate neurons are followed by anafterhyperpolarization (AHP) that may persist for several secondsand may have profound consequences for the firing pattern of theneuron. Each component of the AHP is kinetically distinct and ismediated by different calcium-activated potassium channels. Theprotein encoded by this gene is activated before membranehyperpolarization and is thought to regulate neuronal excitabilityby contributing to the slow component of synaptic AHP. The encodedprotein is an integral membrane protein that forms avoltage-independent calcium-activated channel with three othercalmodulin-binding subunits. This gene contains two CAG repeatregions in the coding sequence. It was thought that expansion ofone or both of these repeats could lead to an increasedsusceptibility to schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, but studiesindicate that this is probably not the case. This gene is a memberof the KCNN family of potassium channel genes. Two transcriptvariants encoding two different isoforms have been found for thisgene. One of the variants lacks the CAG repeat regions. [providedby RefSeq].
