Background
The protein encoded by this gene catalyzes the conversionof sulfated steroid precursors to estrogens during pregnancy. Theencoded protein is found in the endoplasmic reticulum, where itacts as a homodimer. Mutations in this gene are known to causeX-linked ichthyosis (XLI).
